THE PULL OUT METHOD (OR “WITHDRAWAL,” IF YOU’RE FANCY LIKE THAT)

Seriously kids, don’t rely on this method. There are so many better, more reliable options out there for you. But, because I believe in journalistic integrity, I’ll give you the deets. The accurate, reliable deets. Ugh.

How does the pull out method work?

The person with a penis pulls out before they come inside their partner’s vagina. This prevents semen, the fluid carrying most of the sperm, from ejaculating into the vagina. In theory, if there’s no sperm inside the vagina, no sperm can make their way up into the uterus, and no sperm can meet and implant an egg.

How do you practice the pull out method?

You pull out before you come. If you’re the one with the uterus, you pray that your partner will time this shit right.

How much does the pull out method cost?

Nothing.

How effective is the pull out method?

According to Options for Sexual Health, if it goes absolutely perfectly, withdrawal is actually 96% effective at preventing pregnancy. Huh. With typical, imperfect use, that figure drops down to 73% effective at preventing pregnancy.

However, if the partner with a penis doesn’t pull out in time, you’ve effectively just had completely unprotected sex. That’s pretty risky. If you’re the one with the uterus, you’re relying entirely on your partner to do it right. Those are dice I’m just not willing to role. But, if you are willing to take that risk, you do you. Like a good parent, I’ll support you whatever you choose.

Pros

  • Cheap.
  • You don’t need to bring any supplies to the party for two (or three, or four, or more).

Cons

  • Does not protect against STIs.
  • If not done correctly, can greatly increase the risk of pregnancy.
